When a JIT DID purchase fails: refund, release, and an honest swap
A failed just-in-time number buy must refund or release the prepaid hold, offer an explicit swap, and never wear an Activated badge. Statuses product and finance can export — no shop-stock fiction.
A just-in-time (JIT) DID buy is a money path, not a catalogue click. Live search, prepaid hold, then buy and assign. When the live purchase fails, the honest outcomes are refund / release, an explicit swap the buyer confirms, or a terminal fail finance can export. “Activated” on a failed order is a product lie. There is no client-facing pre-bought shop grid to paper over a miss.
IOSOR packages numbers as white-label JIT: one prepaid wallet, catalog live versus in setup. Near USD 1,000+ monthly usage, hold→assign and fail→refund lines become commercial review material. No platform subscription to keep the account alive.
A failed buy is a wallet event
Checkout spinner is not a status. The wallet still holds funds, has released them, has refunded them, or has moved them onto an assigned number. If product shows success while the hold is open, finance reconstructs a Tuesday. Happy path: JIT buying for virtual DIDs. This article is the failure path that path must survive.
Empty search beats a fake “available” row. A fail with a usable, brand-safe error beats an Activated toast.
Hold, purchase, assign — refund and release
| Step | Success | Failure you can defend |
|---|---|---|
| Live search | Current coverage for filters | Empty is honest; no recycled list |
| Prepaid hold | Funds reserved before the live buy | Hold never silently expires into a charge |
| Purchase | Number acquired | Refund / release the hold |
| Assign | DID bound to the account | No Activated badge without assignment |
Over-cap must reject before the hold, with a clear amount. Low prepaid is a stop, not a partial buy — see low-balance stop controls. Setup and prorate live on the success path; they do not excuse fake activation on fail. Calendar: local and toll-free rental reality.
Swap must be explicit, never a silent substitute
When the chosen digits are gone, the only honest follow-up is a swap the buyer confirms: same job, same country class, new candidates, new hold. Silent substitution — different area code, different messaging readiness, same Activated toast — is how product and finance stop believing statuses.
A swap is a new JIT loop. If the alternative is still in setup while the original was sold as live, say so before accept. Failed buys must not wear success badges while ops “finds something close.
Statuses that product and finance can export
Demand a vocabulary that survives a CSV:
- searching
- funds held
- ordering
- assigned
- needs attention / swap offered
- cancelled / refunded
Red flags
- Activated toast on a failing order
- Charge without assignment
- Silent substitute of digits or capability
- Huge unreserved “available” grids
- Hold that neither assigns nor refunds
- Catalog in setup sold as production-ready DID
- Foreign brand names in client-facing errors
Start with IOSOR
Buy one DID for one country and one job. Watch the prepaid hold from live search through purchase. If the buy dies, open the wallet before any retry: the hold must refund or release. Do not leave an Activated badge on a failed order. If those digits are gone, offer a swap the buyer confirms — same job, new candidates, a new hold — never a silent substitute. Export cancelled/refunded or swap offered so finance can reconstruct the day without hallway stories.
IOSOR takeaway
A failed JIT number buy is a wallet event. Honest exits are refund or release of the hold, or an explicit swap the buyer confirms. Activated without assignment is a product lie. Reject over-cap before the hold. An empty search is cleaner than a fake available row.
